Where the North Americans were won and lost
A debrief of every boat, measured against the fleet and against any boat you choose. Pick a boat and the whole page follows it.
Recordings have gaps, especially in races 3 and 4. Two roundings in race 4 and finish gaps in race 8 are unavailable. Speeds are over the ground.

Did the pattern hold each day?
Compare GAMECOCK and Bronco in the same day’s conditions. Values are medians of the included race measurements; missing measurements remain blank. VMG indices use each race’s fleet median as 100. The start sequence shows rank at +2 minutes and links to each race.

The fleet
What decided it
GAMECOCK won the 8-race series on 26 points, ahead of Bronco on 32. One score was discarded after 6 races. The series chart keeps that official result while the race picker lets you revisit the sailing.
Look for the parts of the race that repeatedly separated the boats: the opening two minutes, the first windward mark, pace on the beats and runs, and the cost of each turn. The strongest links to finishing place sit at the top of the chart below.
Friday: the left paid on 3 beats and the right on 3, of 8; Saturday: no side paid clearly on 2 beats; Sunday: the left paid on 3 beats and the right on 0, of 6. Use the race explorer to see where those gains opened up.

Speed and mode
Footing, pointing and the runs
Whole-leg VMG includes route choices and turns. The scatter compares speed and angle during steady sailing; its diagonal is an approximate guide to that trade-off. A faster boat can give the gain back by sailing too low; a higher boat still needs enough pace.

VMG cells measure whole-leg progress, including turns and the route sailed; 100 matches the fleet median for that leg. They are not the steady speed/angle estimates below. Excluded races stay visible, faded. Select a cell to open that boat and race.

The mode estimate combines separate medians of steady speed and angle with a linear approximation. It excludes turns and is not an average of race VMG. The whole-leg index includes the entire run or beat; 100 matches the race fleet. Angles use the course axis rather than measured wind at each boat. Ground tracks cannot separate current, shifts and trim, so this is not a measurement of straight-line true-wind VMG. Adding a race can move these measures in opposite directions.
Reading speed against height
Each large dot is a boat's median across the races; the small dots are GAMECOCK's and Bronco's individual races. Right is higher (upwind) or deeper (downwind) than the race fleet, up is faster. The gold diagonal is equal VMG with the middle of the fleet, and each parallel rung is about one percentage point of steady-mode VMG. The large dot combines separate speed and angle medians; it is not the whole-leg result in the grid.
Speeds are over the ground and include current and leeway. Compare the boats race by race.

Heel
How flat, and whether it mattered
Look for the heel range in which your boat kept making ground, and compare it with the fleet. Treat it as a guide to this regatta, not a target for every condition.

Gamecock: Keep the first beat connected
GAMECOCK won the 2026 IC37 North American Championship with 26 net points, ahead of Bronco on 32. The eight-race series included one discard; your race 8 DNS was discarded. Three wins gave you room to carry both eighths. The next improvement is converting your early position into a dependable first rounding, especially when the race begins to move away from you.
Keep access to the next opportunity
Race 2 gives you a useful reference for building a win. You were fourth at two minutes, rounded second, and took the lead on the second beat. Six tacks on the opening beat accompanied a gain to second; there is no reason to turn that into a blanket instruction to tack less. Review what made each change of tack worthwhile and how you preserved the chance to make the next one. That is the decision standard to carry into practice.
Race 3 needs the closest crew discussion. You led at two minutes, then rounded eighth, 43 seconds behind. You finished eighth. The opening position was already there; the first beat consumed it. Your average position was left of the fleet on a beat where the left paid, so simply choosing the left again is an incomplete answer. Revisit the timing of your crossings and the options available before each commitment. The evidence does not identify a particular bad tack or lane.
Separate a recovery in places from closing the leader
Race 6 exposes the cost of letting the beats undo the runs. You rounded eleventh, climbed to seventh downwind, fell to tenth at the next windward mark, and finished eighth. Both beats favoured the left while your average position was right of the fleet. That makes your willingness to remain separated worth reviewing, without assuming that every move right was wrong.
On the first run you gained four places while the gap to the leader grew from 43 to 64 seconds. Those places mattered, but the leader was still getting away. In the crew conversation, distinguish passing nearby boats from improving your position against the front. Before extending away from the group, state what would justify the separation and what would make you come back. Give that reassessment a clear owner.
Protect the gains on the runs
Looking at where you gained and lost time across races 1–7, you gained 47 seconds per race on the runs and 39 on the beats against the middle of the fleet. Gybes cost five seconds per race. Against Bronco, the runs gained 35 seconds per race while gybes cost four. These comparisons exclude race 8, for which finish timing is unavailable. The downwind opportunity is to retain more of the progress you make between manoeuvres.
Your typical gybe loss was 7.3 metres against six for the fleet, with a lower speed trough. Make the next practice a paired-boat gybe session: establish comparable entry pace, gybe one boat while the other holds course, then exchange roles. Work on reducing separation through the turn and into settled sailing. Have an observer call when the loss begins, and change one part of the sequence before repeating. Keep the entry comparable so the crew can judge whether the adjustment actually improves the exit.
