All nine teams, all nine races and all three racing days are included; every race counts, as the 44Cup has no discard. The practice race and the unsailed final day are excluded. The gun times are inferred from the fleet’s start-line crossings, because the tracking published none. The closing reach into Marstrand harbour in races 6 and 9 is left out of the upwind and downwind comparisons. Official places are authoritative, and speeds are measured over the ground.

Winning without a race win
Charisma took the event without winning a race. She was never worse than sixth, and the regatta was made on the first beat: she gained places there in six of the nine races, usually from a start in the middle of the fleet.
How the series came together
Team Charisma won on 35 points, two clear of GeMera Racing, with every race counting. Her scores were 2–6–2, 2–5–6 and 4–2–6: four second places and nothing worse than sixth.
She took the lead after race 4 and was never lower than second after that. From race 7 she led outright.
The first beat did the work
Off the line Charisma was usually mid-fleet: her median rank two minutes after the gun was sixth, and her median rank at the first windward mark was fourth. She gained places up the first beat in races 1, 2, 3, 4, 7 and 9. The biggest climb was race 4, from seventh one minute after the gun to second at the first mark, and she held second to the finish.
Her two slowest starts were races 2 and 7. Her tracker was 28.5 m and 27.2 m behind the line at the gun and crossed about 13 seconds after it, and she was eighth and seventh one minute in. She still recovered to sixth and fourth.
Where the time came from
Against the fleet median, Charisma gained 15.9 seconds a race, the mean of the seven windward-leeward races. Of that, 12.0 seconds came on the beats after allowing for the start and tacks, and 6.0 seconds on the runs. Gybes cost her 4.3 seconds a race.
Against GeMera over the same seven races she lost 3.0 seconds a race. She was 8.2 seconds a race quicker up the beats, but gave back 6.4 seconds in tacks and 3.5 seconds in gybes.
For the next event
The replays of races 2 and 7 are worth watching together: was the late approach a choice of lane or a timing problem? With starts closer to the front, the first-beat gains would have been building on a better position rather than repairing one.

Weather, coverage and what happened
The tracking, the class association's results and daily reports, and SMHI's Vinga station each tell part of the story. Every racing day is below. The sailors' words come from the class association's own daily reports, quoted with the date; they are set beside what the tracks show, which can confirm a position or a gain but not a motive or a trim choice.
Thursday · A northwesterly and a left-hand bendRaces 1–3
Offshore observations
Vinga's hourly readings over the racing window have a median of 10.7 knots from 293° and a highest gust of 14.8 knots. Vinga is an offshore skerry about 28 km south of the course, so this is context rather than the wind the boats sailed in.
The class report describes a steady 10–12 knot northwesterly and racing on time at 12:00. Black Star's tactician said the first two races had "a very strong left hand bend up the beat"; GeMera's said they gained on the right in the last race.
The left paid on the first beat of races 1 and 2, and Black Star gained five and four places there to lead at the first mark both times. In race 3 neither side paid clearly across the fleet; GeMera went right and came from eighth one minute after the gun to first at the top mark. Black Star and Artemis finished the day on 9 points, Charisma and GeMera on 10.
The class report gives 14 knots from the south, blowing along the shore, with 0.5–0.8 knots of current against the boats upwind. The last race used the 'Foxtrot' course, two laps and then a reach into Marstrand harbour. GeMera was called over early in it, and Black Star was penalised in two port-starboard incidents.
Team Aqua, with Igor Lah steering for Chris Bake, scored 3–2–5, the best day of anyone. Aleph won the harbour race from the front of every rounding. GeMera's track turns back to restart in race 6 and she finished last. Black Star and Charisma ended the day tied on 23. The tracks are measured over the ground, so they cannot separate the current the report describes.
The class report gives an 8–13 knot southerly with flat water and "a knot or more" of current; Peninsula's tactician put it at almost 1.5 knots. Race 7's first windward mark was chaotic, and Team Aqua and Artemis each broke another boat's masthead wand. Aleph and Artemis were called over early in race 8. The day closed with a second harbour finish.
Peninsula's 1–4–2 was the day's best score. GeMera won race 8, and Artemis won the harbour race from the pin-end third of the line. In race 8 the tracks show Aleph and Artemis crossing with the fleet and dipping back within half a minute. Charisma's 4–2–6 left her two points clear of GeMera, and Sunday's racing never started.
Public interviews add the crews’ perspective. A track can show a recovery or a change in
pace; it cannot establish what someone intended, how they trimmed, or why equipment
failed.
Cameron Dunn
Tactician, Black Star Sailing Team
"In the first race we got a nice start down the pin. It wasn't super strong on any side, but we liked the left a little more… in the first two races there was a very strong left hand bend up the beat." (25 June)
Consistent with the tracks. In race 1 Black Star started a fifth of the way up the line from the pin and sailed the left of the fleet; the left paid on the first beat of races 1 and 2, and she led at the first mark in both.
Francesco Bruni
Tactician, GeMera Racing
"On that last race, we gained a lot on the right. It was a bit of a speed race if you had a good start, so starting today was very important." (25 June)
Consistent for GeMera. In race 3 she started at the committee end, sailed to the right of the fleet and went from eighth one minute after the gun to first at the top mark. Across the whole fleet neither side paid clearly on that beat, so the gain is hers rather than a fleet-wide pattern.
Nic Asher
Tactician, Team Nika
"We had a good start from the top of the line, going well and just managed to hold across, get the tack in and we were off." (26 June, race 4)
Consistent with the tracks. Nika started near the committee boat, was first one minute after the gun and led at every mark.
Phil Robertson
Tactician, Artemis Racing
"We had a strategy to start at the pin and go around the outside… it worked." Artemis was also the one boat on the J1 rather than the J2. (27 June, race 9)
The start and the first beat are consistent with the tracks: Artemis started in the pin-end third, went left, where the first beat paid, and led from the first mark. The headsail choice is not visible in tracking.
Vasco Vascotto
Tactician, Peninsula Racing
"There was almost 1.5 knots so to be shy at the marks would make life very difficult…" (27 June)
Not visible in the tracks. Positions are measured over the ground, so they show where boats went but cannot measure the current. Peninsula rounded the first mark of race 7 in the lead and won the race.
Courses, the downwind finish, Course F and scoring with no discard. The event SI and its amendment are at https://www.44cup.org/images/uploads/teamzone/SWE-SI-26-V1.pdf.
Why 28 June was not sailed, and the teams' reflections on the week.
The tracking published no start times. Each gun is the whole minute just before the first boat crossed the line; in all nine races the leaders crossed two to five seconds after it. Boats reported as called over early match those times, which places the real guns within a few seconds of them. Distances and times at the gun carry that uncertainty, and positions are the tracker's, not the bow's.
No official finish or elapsed times are published. Finish times here are GPS line crossings. In every race the order agrees with the official places except race 3, where Black Star crossed 0.7 seconds ahead of Team Aqua and the official order stands.
Races 6 and 9 finished after a reach into Marstrand harbour. That reach is left out of the upwind and downwind comparisons and of the time comparison, which therefore covers the seven windward-leeward races.
The boats carried no heel or compass sensors in the public data, so heel charts are empty and angles are over the ground. Vinga is an offshore station 28 km south, reporting once an hour.
The fleet
What decided it
Nine RC44s sailed nine races over three days, and every race counted: the 44Cup has no discard. Team Charisma won on 35 points with GeMera Racing two behind on 37. Charisma did not win a race. Her worst score was a sixth, and she was second in four races. Black Star Sailing Team won three races and led after the first two days, but an eighth in each of the two harbour-finish races and a 6–7–8 on Saturday dropped her to fourth on a tie-break with Team Nika.
The final Sunday was lost to no wind, so the series ended with Saturday's racing. Aleph Racing was eighth after race 4; 1–2–3 across races 6 to 8 and a fifth in race 9 took her to third. Team Aqua and Artemis Racing each carry two penalty points from race 7 on top of their race scores. Without them Artemis would have finished on 43, level with Aleph; with them she was sixth on 45, a point ahead of Peninsula.
The measured factor that moved most closely with finishing place was pace up the beats: whole-leg upwind VMG and rank at the first windward mark sit well above everything else in the chart below. In a fleet this evenly matched the first beat usually set the order, and the runs changed it less. These are associations within this event, not proof of cause. Part 2 separates steady-sailing comparisons from whole-leg outcomes and shows how much of each comparison is supported.
Look for the parts of the race that repeatedly separated the boats: the opening two minutes,
the first windward mark, pace on
the beats and runs, and the cost of each turn. The strongest links to finishing place sit at
the top of the chart below.
Thursday: the left paid on 2 beats and the right on 0, of 6; Friday: the left paid on 3 beats and the right on 0, of 6; Saturday: the left paid on 2 beats and the right on 1, of 6. Use the race explorer to see where those gains opened up.

Speed and mode
Footing, pointing and the runs
Whole-leg VMG includes route choices and turns. The scatter compares speed and angle during
steady sailing; its diagonal is an approximate guide to that trade-off. A faster boat can give
the gain back by sailing too low; a higher boat still needs enough pace.

the entire run or beat; 100 matches the race fleet. Angles use the course axis rather than
measured wind at each boat. Ground tracks cannot separate current, shifts and trim, so this is
not a measurement of straight-line true-wind VMG. Adding a race can move these measures in
opposite directions.
Reading speed against height
Each large dot is a boat's median across the races; the small dots are Team Charisma's
and GeMera Racing's individual races. Right is higher (upwind) or deeper (downwind)
than the race fleet, up is faster. The gold diagonal is equal VMG with the middle of the
fleet, and each parallel rung is about one percentage point of steady-mode VMG. The large
dot combines separate speed and angle medians; it is not the whole-leg result in the grid.
Speeds are over the ground and include current and leeway. Compare the boats race by race.

Observed ground-speed polar. Ground speed by wind angle for Team Charisma, GeMera Racing and the fleet.
